What’s Happening This July at Westfield?
This July we are thinking Maker’s Month. How, historically, people used their hands to make beautiful craft and art through their daily life both in the home and at work. Check out what will be happening each Sunday that we are open from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. including the Family Craft that we have planned.
Don’t forget that you can use your HCA membership for free admission to Westfield. (You also get a great discount for our Dairy Delicious Event happening August 3 and 4. Bring up to 6 people in one car for $10.00. Just make sure to make your Reservation ahead of time!)
July 6 – Trade Secrets
We are highlighting the trades in the village. Kids will get an activity book that will challenge them to visit 6 of the trades and achieve level of apprentice by completing an activity in each space. The buildings include the Tailor Shop, Spinning and Weaving Shop, Print Shop, Boot and Harness Shop, Cabinetmaker Shop, and Blacksmith Shop. Welcome also to the Ontario Blacksmith Association who will be out with portable forges.
The Family Craft is at #25 on the map and we are making a friendly sheep using wool and a pine cone.
July 13 – A Stitch in Time We are highlighting the needlecrafts and fibre arts that one might see through the various time periods. A rug hooking guild will be having a “hook-in” at building #25, a quilting demonstration and display at the Dry Goods Store #26, a knitting machine demonstration at the Misener House, needlepoint, embroidery, cross stitch, spinning and weaving at some of our other buildings.
Stop in at the school house and learn to paper weave a placemat.
July 20 – Colour Your World
We are highlighting the artistic talents of some of our volunteers. A painting lesson on the green, explore the world of pigments and paints and dyeing fibres using items from nature at the Marr Spinning and Weaving Shop. The school teacher will be at the school giving an art lesson on this Sunday.
The craft is using broccoli as your paint brush to paint a tree using various shades of green.
July 27 – Making something in the Kitchen
Even food can be an art – a Culinary Art that is. A journey through the various time periods showing visitors what can be made in a historic kitchen.
The craft is a Mason Jar card ready to be filled.
Don’t forget we are also offering a Mindful Hike this morning. Make a reservation through our website.
