October is a favourite month at Westfield! There’s nothing like the beautiful fall colours, a crackling fire in our historic kitchens, and getting out the cozy knits for our costuming. This October our Sunday themes all centre around the historic kitchens. Plan to come for a walk on the trails to see the fall colours and then visit our historic buildings to see history come alive before you. A selection of historic buildings are open Sundays and Thanksgiving Monday, October 13 from 12 to 4:00 p.m. Don’t forget to book your reservation for our Witches’ Halloween Party on October 25 or October 26.
Sunday, October 5 – Cookies!
We’re baking cookies in our historic kitchens! Often we are baking and cooking other food items so that we give a more rounded experience of what people ate over the various time periods that we show here at Westfield, but we thought we would have some fun talking about this delightfully sugary treat that was and is popular across the decades. Did they eat cookies in the early 1800s? Come find out.
The family craft has a gingerbread theme too!
Sunday, October 12 and Monday, October 13 – Bread!
Yes, we are open both Sunday and Monday from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. and we are taking a look at bread. Every time period and every culture has some type of bread that forms an important part of the diet. How did they bake bread in the early 1800s? What was used as a leavening agent in the Victorian era? How much did it cost to buy a loaf of bread in the early 1900s? Even at the School we are having some fun with our theme. Come find out.
Yes, there will be turkey this weekend – our family craft is making your very own turkey friend.
Sunday, October 19 – Preserves!
We are taking a look at the importance of preserving food for the winter. Without refrigeration the historic kitchens would have been a hive of activity drying, salting and pickling food. Preserving food is enjoying a surge in popularity as people try to reduce food waste, save money and improve nutrition. Come see how techniques learnt a century ago are still relevant today.
The family craft is a mason jar note card.
Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26 – Halloween at Westfield – A Witches’ Halloween Party – By Reservation Only
Don’t forget to make your reservation for our family friendly Halloween Event. This year’s theme is a Witches’ Halloween Party. Join in the fun and wear your costume.
