Westfield is excited to be able to offer on-site education field trips to our student visitors. Starting April 5, we will be accepting bookings for on-site visits taking place in the months of May and June 2022.

We are easing back into our education field trips with our program Down on the Farm. Explore the similarities and differences of families, groups, and communities living in the time period 1790-1850, their ways of living and the impact they had on the world around them.

Students will be guided through four learning stations by Westfield’s costumed educators and given opportunities to engage in a unique range of active learning experiences. The four stations include:

On the Way to School

Take a seat in the 1845 Cathcart School and learn about life as a mid-19th century student.  Lessons and role-playing activities, based on mid-19th century subject matter and teaching methods, will give your students a first-hand glimpse of life in an early rural schoolhouse.

Mud, Floods & Bears

Individuals and families travelling in the period 1780 to 1850 faced extreme challenges; many caused by the environments in which they lived.  At the c. 1818 D’Aubigny Inn, students will identify the hazards of early travel and work together to create strategies for overcoming them.

Footprints

Explore the direct connection between human activity and natural environments through a series of guided explorations.  Students will discover both the short and long-term impacts of humans living and working within natural spaces and how this can differ according to the individuals, groups or communities who encounter that environment.

Wash Up & Scrub Down

Keeping clean, healthy, and safe on a small, remote farm was hard work in the period 1780 to 1850.  Families had to find ways to overcome these challenges and all members had an important role in this.  Working in small teams, your students will learn how to care for health, home and farm through fun, hands-on activities.

This program runs from 10:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The cost is $11.00 per student for a minimum of 20 students. Make sure to ask about our Balanced Day Schedule option and our Midday Lunch Schedule option. To book your trip please email us at westfield@conservationhamilton.ca or call 519-621-8851.
