A Taste of Warm Bread – Oct. 2

Bread on an old fashioned tableOn Sunday, October 2 from 12:30 – 4:00 pm, enjoy the taste of warm bread, baked in Westfield’s wood burning ovens.  After many years of being dismissed as a mere “carb,” bread has been making a comeback.  A very big comeback.  With links to the whole foods movement, both professional and amateur bakers are working hard to rekindle the traditional skills needed to produce delicious breads using time-tested recipes, ingredients and techniques.   A loaf featuring the perfect (or rather, imperfect) crackling crust, soft, moist interior, ideal texture and taste is the ultimate goal, and one not easily achieved.

Enter Westfield Heritage Village.  The bakers there know a thing or two about traditional, homemade bread baking.  Using wood stoves, open hearths and a high-capacity outdoor bake oven, these talented and ambitious volunteers have spent countless hours researching, testing and refining bread recipes used in 19th century Ontario.  These recipes reflect the cultural backgrounds of some of Ontario’s earliest immigrant communities, and include such delicious items as knackebrod, Irish soda bread, corn bread and potato loaves.  They are looking forward to sharing a taste what they’ve learned this Sunday during a unique program called A Taste of Warm Bread.

Lisa Hunter, Program Coordinator at Westfield, is looking forward to welcoming visitors to the museum this Sunday.  “With the cooler temperatures on their way, a lot of us start thinking about some of our favourite comfort foods.  Fresh baked, warm bread is definitely one of the nicest things on that list.  Westfield is a great place to discover some of the amazing breads, and bread-like foods, that were enjoyed in early Ontario.”

Westfield Heritage Village is a living history museum located in Rockton, Ontario, midway between Hamilton and Cambridge.  Authentically costumed interpreters will take you back to earlier times and places through demonstrations and activities reflecting life in early Ontario.  With more than thirty-five historic buildings, Westfield is a great place for families and friends to explore together.  Bring your camera!

A Taste of Warm Bread takes place on Sunday October 2 from 12:30 - 4:00.  Westfield is located at 1049 Kirkwall Road, Rockton.  Please call (519) 621-8851 for more information, visit westfieldheritage.ca or find us on Facebook.
