Savour the Sweet Taste of Spring
Nothing says spring like a warm sunny day in the sugar bush at Westfield Heritage Village’s annual Maple Syrup Festival! Maple Syrup at Westfield begins on Sunday, March 4 and runs Sundays throughout March as well as Wednesday and Thursday of March Break and on Good Friday. Come and see both traditional and modern methods for making maple syrup and sample some of the syrup that’s made right on site at Westfield!
“We watch the temperatures carefully and start tapping trees in February, “says Peter Lloyd, Collections Officer at Westfield. “We look for days when the temperature rises above freezing in the daytime and then drops back below zero at night.”
There is so much to learn! See demonstrations of traditional techniques used in early Ontario to produce maple syrup. Then take a short, picturesque walk to Westfield’s sugar bush where you can visit the sugar shack and learn about (and taste!) some of Westfield’s very own maple syrup produced in a modern evaporator.
“Many people don’t realise that over 70% of the world’s maple syrup is made in Canada,” says Rondalyn Brown, Westfield’s Manager. “It’s a unique part of our heritage with a rich history – our staff and volunteers love to celebrate this great tradition with visitors.”
Learn about Ontario’s past and our local history by exploring more than 30 historic buildings which are staffed by the village’s authentically costumed volunteer interpreters. Visit the Gift Shop for a wide selection of maple products, including syrup, fudge, teas and candies. At the General Store you can purchase sweet treats. Enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast served up and sold by St. George Lion’s Club at the Ironwood Hall.
The Maple Syrup Festival at Westfield is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to learn about maple syrup and about Ontario’s history. Bring a friend or the whole family! Tours and demonstrations run throughout the day and there are free tractor-drawn wagon rides to enjoy a tour around the village.
