A Taste of Warm Bread

Enjoy the taste of warm bread, baked in Westfield’s wood burning ovens. After many years of being dismissed as a mere “carb,” bread has been making a comeback. A very big comeback. With links to the whole foods movement, both professional and amateur bakers are working hard to rekindle the traditional skills needed to produce delicious breads using time-tested recipes, ingredients and techniques. A loaf featuring the perfect (or rather, imperfect) crackling crust, soft, moist interior, ideal texture and taste is the ultimate goal, and one not easily achieved.
Enter Westfield Heritage Village. The bakers there know a thing or two about traditional, homemade bread baking. Using wood stoves, open hearths and a high-capacity outdoor bake oven, these talented and ambitious volunteers have spent countless hours researching, testing and refining bread recipes used in 19th century Ontario. These recipes reflect the cultural backgrounds of some of Ontario’s earliest immigrant communities, and include such delicious items as knackebrod, Irish soda bread, corn bread and potato loaves. They are looking forward to sharing a taste what they’ve learned this Sunday during a unique program called A Taste of Warm Bread.
